GISBORNE, June 8. On a rain sodden ground that br.-ame heavier and greasier as the result of drizzle during the later stages, Poverty Bay defeated the Wairarapa tnuring team to-day by 12 points to 6. In the first half the home side, plaving into a light wind," dominated the game both baek and forwad, registering nine points. In the seeond half Wairarapa changed tacties and, eonceritrating on keeping the play tight, had Bay on the defensive for fully 30 minutes dur-« ing which they put on six points. Tho tourists' fast dribbling rushes worried Bay, whoso baeks were finding the heavv greasv ball inereasingly ditfieuR to handle and Wairarapa for a long time looked like snatching victory. Bay, however, rallied in the last 10 minutes and, adapting tacties to the conditions, pulled the game out oF the fire with another trv. For Poverty Bay tries were seored by W. Brown- (2) and J. Clearv, while R. Clay potted a goal. For Wairarapa R. Birchfield seored a try, and A. Mataipuku kicked a penalty goal.
