Topical Hints To Assist Indoor Bowlers

f "Drawshot")

. . (B:

This week a few hints for piayers jwil be given in my space. I feel ' liis may aid new piayers, and cven the older ones, towards better Play. | The kitty rule as it applies in this district is as foliows: — The winjning iead thruws the kitty and if it is not thrown correctly, it reverts to the opposing lead to throw. If this player does no, throw it correctly, it is then spotted half way between the minimum and maximuni length marks, the latter being the front of the playing square. This rule is like y to be adopted throughout New Zealand. Umpires should be appointed in each club and when teams are in douiit after measuring shots, an umpire should be cal'ed to measure. The umpire, of course, should not be an ini.erested party in the game, and when he has given his decision it is final. Piayers should also watch the rule regarding delivering a bowl with feet on the mat. No part 'of the body should be on the mat when delivering except the hand holdin gthe bowl. Another point to be watched is delivering the bowl outside the playing square, especiaily outside the side-lines, as a defihite advantage can be gained thereby. This is, however, a difficult point to determine, as the rule say s "at the point of deiivery," which means neither before nor after, but at the moment of deiivery. Skips should always endeavour to give expucit directions, deciding which is the best way of sticking to one direction — no "this or that" business, thus confusing Ihe mind of the player. Above all, always remember that bowls is a sociable game — never let smallness and pinpricking creep into your club. Go out of your way to make the other person's game enjoyabie as well as - your own. Remember that the rules are there to guide you and it is for you to adhere to them cheer-J:

fuTy. Don't criticise the other fellow — see that you do the right thing yourself and if all members do this you will have a friendly attitude prevailing throughout your club, which is the main aim of the sport. i
