Wind Reaches Gale Force
, ♦ : Followihg almost a week of wind and rain, the stiff south-easterly continued to freshen until it reacheTd its peak at about 4 p.m. yesterday afternoon, when a'gust of 64 m.p.h. was recorded at the Shannon railway station. This "was followed by gusts of up to 58 m.p.h. an'd the average yelocity after 4 p.m. was recorded at 48 to 50 m.p.h. Some damage has been reported, mostly displace'd roofing and one or two broken windows. There were only one or two faults reported in the electric power supply system. ■ During the early part of the gale a workman engaged in the erection of the roof on one of the new houses under construction at •Okuku Road suffered an injury to his arm when a sheet of roofing iron was .blown against him, causing a severe cut. After medical attention he was taken to hospital. Heavy rain, both locally and in the Wairarapa, has cause'd a sharp rise in the Manawatu River and there still remains the possibility of a flood. The level of 21ft 6ins at the Shannon Bridge this morning shows a rise of' three feet overnight. The river was just topping its own banks at 8 a.m this mnmmtr
