No Taxation Cuts Or Wage Rises For Britons
Comriffht)
Beceived Wednesday, 10 a.iri. LONDON, June 7.The Britisk people could not expect any'cuts in taxation or any increases in wages, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Sir Stafford Cripps, told the t Labour Party conference at Blackpool today. He said that the only hope of overcoming the country's economic difficulties was more production. Sir Stafford, in an uncompromising speech, stood firmly by his much-criticised Budget proposals. Following Sir Stafford's speech, the conference overwhelmingly rejected a resolution by the Constructional Engineering Union, which called for the removal of the restriction on wage increases, tax on profits, continued control of prices and the introduction of an interim Budget in the autumn. Sir Stafford warned d6legates at the conference not to be drawn into the pincer movement spread by "Dismal Desmond" propaganda, which was intended to make the
British people feel miserable. The Tory machine provided one arm of the pincers and the Communists the other. The propaganda sought to persuade people that they were a suffering and decadent nation, continued the Chancellor. It was wholly false. Britain was the most virile democracy in the world. ^ Sir Stafford said that the country's economic difficulties could not be solved by juggling with money incomes, finance or fiscal measures.
