WELLINGTON, June 4. The field to contest the Great Northern Steeplechase at Ellerslie on Monday is much below the quality expected in such an important jumping event. The class crosscountry horse is prominent by its stbsenc 0 There is Only one genuine stayer ovei; four miles in the field, Page's , Raid, andv of.late years he also has not been too reliable at his fences, [f he takes it in 'his head to do the right thing, he would win well, but will he? The one that gives every indication of seeing .out the journey is Gaiety, a very reliable fencer up.to'three miles. The extra mile should" not,. • greatly trouble this Awapuni-trained mare, who has never been'fitter in : her short jumping career. " Golden Reign and Whooray are the . pair in great demand in the north, and like y to dispute favouritism. Roman N^'d is the best of a poor lot on the minimum. There is every likelihood of Gaiety bringing honour to Awapuni, her most dangerous opposition being Whooray and Golden Reign.
