Grainger in the Magis^trate's Court, Levin, yesterday When describing events which had led up to a visit to the Levifi Hotel bar aj} 8.35 p.ms oh April 14, Where 25 persons were found drinking. No :ne had given an explafiatlon of his presence. Three charges were laid against (ihe licensee," Ernest Frederick Ward, but the police later asked for permission to withdraw two,' and a charge of sellin'g liquor aftef hburs was preferred. RobCi't Hdlley de -Malmanche, a barman at the hotel, faced a charge of selling liquor after hours, being a person other than the licensee. Mr. , J, Todd appeared for both these defendants and pleaded guilty. In the cEtse against Ward, Sefgeaht Grainger said that defendant claimed that he had been to Wellington. He had made this claim on two previous oCcasio'ns, but this time he had actually been in the bar ahd had not borne the appearance .of a man who had just returned from a trip. For Ward, Mr. Todd said that it had been a fjarticularly bUsy day, because it had beeh the day befbre Good Friday. Ward had been to Lo.wer Hutt to collect his daughter ffom school, and had been late returning. He had actually bCen going to take steps to clear the bar when the police had made their visit. Sergeant Grainger pointed out that Mr. Todd's reffiafk, that it had been a busy day, did not infer that such offences were made every late night. The magistrate, Mr. A. A. McLachlan fined Ward £5, with 10s costs, and de Malmanche £3, with 10s Costs. Those foufid on thC premises paid penalties - varying ffom £2 to £1. The defendants who made no appearance wei*e fifiied £2, those who pleaded guilty by letter £1 10s, and those who appeafed in court £1. In the case of Kevin Sherman, of Wanganui, who pleaded guilty by letter, the fine was reduced to £1 and an order made for the forfeiture of the carton of beer.
