Flailing Fists And Wild Kicking
SYBNEY, June 2. Pictures published by both the Byttney morning papers show the Newcastle forwards in the act of committing infringements against the Maoris in yesterday's match at Newcastie. A picture in the Sydney Morning Hehald shows the Newcastie forwaras, J. Crowsen and G. Dyas, firmly grippxng a Maori forward and blocking the movements of others, while t'he ball lies on the ground at the extreme left. The Daily Telegraph picture is captioned "Tori Reid fends off an open handed blow from George Dyas, while Phil Mooney holds his ofcher arm. " Rugby Union writers praise the work of the halfback, Cyril Burlce, in tne match. "Burke, whom Newcastie oflficials claiin was made the scapegoat for the New Sout'h Wales defeat last Saturday was outstanding in the Newcastie game," says Phil Tresidder in the Telegraph. "He consistently saved Newcastie with well-judged line kielcs after picking the ball from the toes of the Maori forwards. "The lighter, more mobile and virile Newcastie teain was outplayed for 70 minutes during which period they 6xposed serious weaknesses in the Maori back line play. They also demonstrated that the fiory Maori forwards could be tamed by the forwards who were wiiiing to tackle fearlessly and mix it in the rough stuff. "The Newcastie forwards conceded nearly two stone a man, but they aroused t'he erowd by standing up to their opponents and trading punch for prrnch in the heated second half rueks that broke up with flailing fists and wild kicking.
