COST OF EDUCATION

PARENT.

Sir,— I am writing'Jas a public; protest against "the. very high cosf pf education >at the Horowhenua College. It is just one imposition after another, the latest being the instruction' to boys taking metal work. to buy. a book . .priced at . 7s Whem they have' already ' had to! purchase a special exercise book for this subject at a cost of 4s 6d. To cap the lot is the "aetivities fee" of 15s. I belieye this is. to cover the cost of fransport to football, cricket and basketball matches, but the children who go to these games, tell me that they'always have to . pay their bus fares. Only a very small proporfion of the chil'drm ever get into these travelling teams and I eannot see why children who derive no benefit should hgve to pay these fees. My own children have never been in a team of any kind and this year I have a bqy attendihg the. college for whom I have had to buy football boots and a jersey in a'ddition to. all his school books and clothes, which included white shorts and teionis shoes for physicah education. From a recent meeting of the Advisory Board it was reported in your paper that the college principal had said that the Education Board's latest grait was so generous as to be embarrassingp and.he did not know how to spend it. Just iet him reMeve some of the financial purden of the parents and he will soon dispose of it. Yours, etc.,

Levin, May 31.
