Stortford Lodge Stock Values
HASTINGS, June 1. Farmers again paid spring prices for store slieep at tlie Stortford Lodge saie. Followed by a large gatliering, bidding for better quality lines was spirited. Wethers showed a tendeney to harden in value. The market for. lam bs and in-lamb -ewes was again sound with -prices at late rates. Most lines in the yarding of 3000 head, were fewer than 10 head thus giving small farmers an opportunity to ni'eet their requirements. Two-tooth wethers ranged frorn 43s to 43s 6d, lighter making 39s 4d. Values for grown wethers ranged frorn 43s 8d to 45s 6d. The best priee of 36s 3d was obtained for a quality line of shorn wether lambs. Other shorn wether lambs made 27s 7d to 32s, shorn ewe lambs. 37s 9d, Down-cross lambs 30s 9d to 37s 7d, mixed aged ewes 38s to 40s, and 4 and 5-year-old at 40s. Little interest was shown in the clfering of 440 head of store cattle. Buyers .preferred genuine station cattle and several dealers'- lines were passed in. Generally the cattle olfered were in good order for men with grazing. Bullocks whieh were in short supply iealised £14 17s 6d, 31-year steers £13 6s, 30-months steers £12 12s to £13 11s, and good weaner steers £6 15s, empty cows at £8 10s to £9, and empty 30-months heifers at £10 7s. Only a few light bullocks appeared among the entry of 130 head of fat cattle. ■ Heifers dominated the yarding. A well iinished consignment of 12 Blaeks ranging frorn £14 18s 6d to £16 13s 6d, topped the sale. Lightweiglit ox changed hands at £15 13s 6d to £19 3s 6d, prime quality heifers at £15 3s 6d to £16 13s 6d, lighter at £13 11s to £14 18s Gd, unfinishe'd down to £9 18s 6d. For prime cows buyers paid £12 Ss 6d to £14 18s 6d, mediumweights £12 3s 6d to £12 18s 6d, and light £11 ls. Heavy vealers realisc-d £6 7s 6d to £7 5s, others £5 to £5 19s, small £3 to £3 12s 6d. Kunners made to £9 10s. Fat slieep .values lifted by up to 2s a head following a rise in the works schedule rates. Quality was generally excellent in a medium-sized entry. Three pens of top quality aged ewes sold at 26s lOd to 40s lOd, extra prime young ewes frorn the sauie source made up to 49s 4d, and heavy wethers up t o 50s ld. For prime aged ewes butcliers paid 32s 4d to 34s lOd, medium 29s lOd to 3.1s lOd, unlinished at 2Ts 10s to 28s 1 d. ' Prime youhg ewes changed liauds at 44s 7d to 47s 10J, . others at 38s 4d to 4Us ld, and light at ' 31s lOd to 35s lOd. Heavy wethers 1 realised 47s 7d to 50s ld, with lighter at 43s 7d to 46s 4d. Heavy laiubs were traued at 59s 7d to 43s lOd, and others at 33s 4d to 37s lOd.
