HUNT CUP TO IMPERIAL CROWN
Lord Azure Wins Fast Run Seven . The Manawatu Hunt.Cup Steeplechase, feature race at Awapuni on Saturday, was won by Imperial Crown from Griffin and Beau Court and the jumping right through was wonderfully good. Ruling. Moment set the pace for nearly two miles but Imperial Crown jumped to the front five furlongs from home and never afterwards JLooked like bffing beaten. Griffin had jumped into third plaee sefcond tinie over the stand double and half a mile from home he set out after Imperial Crown. The leader was four lengths in front as they raeed to the last fenee and he won by over a length from Griffin! Beau Court, last but one a mile from home, finished ,well for third twelve lengths from Griffin and Vernon, fairly well placed all through, finished solidly for fourth. Next home were . Rondelle and Jigaboo. ■
The day was overcast and rain set in , just after the second race. The gomg was fast to begin with but it becanie : slower as the day progressed. There was a large attendance and the totaiisator handled £43,952, compared witfi £47,0434 last year, the decrease bemg £30914, "which was not bad considering that the rain kept many people away from the totalisator. This was a grand race and six furlongs from home, with three fences stiU to jump, there were five horses still weri in the picture. One of them, however, lost his rider at the brush short of tne straight entrance and Baksoon went on to win by just over a length from Fluffy ten lengths in front of Money Machine, which just beat War Elfort. Bright Silver lost his rider at tne first fence, Tid-Apa came to grief at the sixth and Tudor Chief at the second last fence. Tudor Chief led early from Money Machine, ttpeed King, Fluffy, Baksoon and Tid-Apa. Over the double^ the second time Tudor Chief and Speeo King were together in front and Bait soon and Money Machine with Fluffy and Sailor's Song next. Fluffy went up to Speed King and Tudor Chief at the six and they were closely followed 'by Baksoon and Money Machine. Tne leaders were clear of'War Effort. V\hen Tudor Chief came to grief Fluffy and Money Machine iefh to -tne last fence ahead of Baksoon, Speed King and W ar Effort, a,nd oiice over that Baksoon set out after Rl'UffY and won by just Over a length. Christmas, Awapuni.; The Pagan and Newel Post were responsible for most of the pace and at the half-mile they led from Loyal Oainp, Craven, Keen Wit, Wiremu, La Selle, Middoon, Tudor Maid, Par Avion and Rangitahua. Paulus was pulled up. Loyal Camp led into the straight and won easily by a length from Keen Wit four lengths in front of The Pagan. Tudor Maid was sixth followed by Middoon, Craven and La Selle. Lord Luck was left in oharge but he fell at the next fence and Lucky Anna went down over hiin. This left Follow Suit in front from Fort Royal, Mesalliance, Bonifort and Omaio. • Dawn March then moved up quickly and when Hinewaka and. The Maiden Stakes was run in divisions and in the first Clueless and Golden Robes led into the straight ahead of First Offen'ce with three lengths to Wembley, Chief OffiCerffnd Oberon. First Qffence was in front a furlong from hofne but was u'ndefr 'pres^ sure over the last bit to beat Chief Officer by half a length. Oberon finished fast for third three lengths away, and Golden Robes and Wembley were next. In the second division Grand Venture turned for home a length ahead of Rappel followed by Co-operate, Lionne Rouge, General Gift and Foreign Mail. Rappel and Grand Venture fought the" finish and Rappel won by a neck.
