New Zealand Will Shortly Be The Only Dominion
LONDON, May 27. In a letter to The Times, Mr Frederick Madden, Beit Letturer on the History of the British Empire at Rhodes House, Oxford, says that shortly the word Dominion which was applied in 1907 to all the self-govern-ing colonies of the British Empire will be strictly applicable to New Zealand alone. Mr Madden emphasises the danger of replacing the word Empire, which has now fallen into disuse in every case, by the word Commonwealth. "The use of the word Empire lias become distasteful," he continues, "because it has been employed for so long to describe a condition of strict subordination and absolute control. This usage of the word has overlaid the memory of the nobler liberal imperialism of the evangelicals and colonial reformers in the earlier part of the present century. If the word Commonwealth is applied without discrimination to people who are both self-governing and strictly dependent it will come to lose its distinctive associations of freedom and equality just as the word Empire has done.
