Steeplechasers In Action At Awapuni

A grand school over thirteen steeplechase ' fences "by the Great Northern Steeplechase candi,date Gaiety, was the highlight of yesterday's interesting programme at Awa- . puni. Gaiety, ridden hy M. Andrews, had Peter Quex (W. Rout) as a companion for the first ten fences and when Peter Quex, who- had jumped really well, dropped out Gaiety was speeded up and after negotiating another threey hrush fences she came hoihe the last half mile very-strongly. She jumped splendidly and the 'triai was over two and a quarter miles. She is to leave for EUerslie next Tuesday and Andrews will Pilot her ; in the Great Northern, The conditions were ideal, the going vas perfect/and the jumpers attraeted nost interest. Among the first to jump the country vere Tid-apa (J. Ilely), Vernon (W. lont) and Northfield (J. Harris). They ' vent once round and Northfield misjudged the iogs and came to grief. Ruling Moment Was Brilliant. Ruling Moment (Mrs. Christmas) jumped brilliantly onee round and made mly oue mistake when he went in to ;he first of the double on an angle and •an off at the second. Sir Raleigh (1\1. Andrews) went with him from the jrush fences in the back but Ruling Moment drew away and was well clear it the double. The pair were taken oack and they jumped the double perfectly. Otamaire (F. Buchanan) went twice round over the big fences, juinping bixteen of them. •Baksoon Jumped Splendidly. , Baksoon (Andrews; also took on the country, jumping efeven fences with out putting a foot wrongly. He jumped with great confidence and shaped really well. . Over the Hurdles. Several horses were sehooied over the hurdles and oue of the best trials was that of Mesalliance (J. Harris) and Result (Stevens). Carey (Dixon) and Hinewaka (Andrews) and Cable Stitsh (J. Harris) were others put over the hurdles and all jumped well. Trials on the Flat. Gallops on the course proper included those of Nighthena (G. R. Tattersali ) and Ivippo (J. Carter) seven in 1.42, the last three in 42; seven by Mr. Moutoa (W. J. Broughton) the last three in 40 4-5; six by Lady Oratory (Tattersali) and Confess (J. Harris) in 1.25 1-5; half a mile by Sonia (Tattersali) and Newel Post (L. ,J. Clutterbuck) in 54 1-5; seven by Lady Orelio (Clutterbuck) and Aristea (Htevens) in 1.86 8-5, the last three in 41; three by Black Fear] (W. L. Aitken) and Martafe (J.i Hely) in 41 4-5; and once • irpiind By j. Loyal Camp (Mr. G. 11. ; -Jamt^), theylast th^ee in 41 2-5.
