No Death Penalty Labour Reaffirms
WELLINGTON, May 24. The abolition of the death penalty „as part of the Labour Party policy, was reaffirmed by the jannual conference of the party. The conference rejected a proposal that life sentence should be imprisonment for the term of the prisoner's natural life. The offlcial report of the conference stated that the comparatively shorf sentences served by some j>ersons sentenced to life imprisonment, were the subject of comment. Mrs. E. Barrett, of Auckland, said women considered Erie Mareo should not have been released. The Minister of Justice, Mr. Mason, said the troubles encoun,tered had nothing to do with the relea'se of life prisoners. The troiible had been due tc short sentenced imposed by Judges ir the humanitarian sense. Referred to the Government for con sideration were propbsals that, in majoi eriminal charges where State aid i: provided, the aid should cover specialisi services including psychiatrists selectec by the defenee and that legal assist anee at a nominal fee be more readibj available.
