Assaults On Constables Not To Be Tolerated

AUCKLAND, May 19. "I will not tolerate assaults on onr constables in the exeeution of their duty. There is but one penaltv for that offence and that is imprisonment. " This reminder was given today by Mr. F. McCarthy, S.M., v\ l en Bob Pennev, aged 34, admitted assaulting Constable R. Cuthbert on May 12. The Magistrate said Pennv had no right to assault the constalile but he would take into account the submission that accused was drunk. Mr. McCarthy passed sentence of one nionth's imprisonment with hard labour. On further cliarges of miseliief and being without lawful excuse on enclosed premises, which he admitted, Penney was convicted and discharged.
