Dramatic Rush To Save Child's Life
WELLINGTON, May 19. Iiaclio and high speed driving in vvliicli traffic by-laws vent overboard, conibined to save tlic life of a Klian dallah eliild who swallowed a bottle of poisonous liniiuent last evening. Tlie . trip from Khandallah to the Wellington Public Hospital took eight minutes witli a radio equipped taxi hitting a maxi niuin speed of 73 miles per hour. When the taxi eompany received the call it immedintely diverted its nearest i radio equipped taxi to Khandallah. The taxi office was granted dispensation bv the Wellington Traffic Department to brealc what traffic by-laws were considered necessary and the cab driver made all possible speed. The taxi 'eompany also got into conmninicatio'i with the hospital and then called the driver who also got into communication with the hospital. The driver was able" to state what had happened, tlius en abling the hospital to prepare for tiie treatment of the child. The driver passed two intcrsections in the eitv with the lights against him, the only check in the taxi 's career being c'aused by a traincar turning into the street from a side street. Two doctors were in readiness at the hospital and within minutes after the child 's adinission its stomach had been puinped clear of the poison • The child, vvliicli is aged two vears and three- months, was reported to be in a satisfaetory condition today.
