Collier On Reef Abandoned By Crew
Eeceived Thursday, 7.80 p.m. SYDXEY, May 19. After spending the night aboard the collier Munmorah now breaking up on a reef at Bellambi Point, 40 miles south of Sydnev, inembers of the crew have abandoned the ship. Captain K. Knutsen, two officers and a marin'e surveyor stayed aboard some hours after the others but were then taken off Dy a launch. Little hope is now held or [ salvaging the vessel which is taking in |; water through gaping holes in the hull. [ The plight of the crew beeame serious last night as big seas whipped up by a southerly wind, caused the Munmorah to list 30 degrees. Because of the difficultv of operating sniall boats in the darkness in the reef strewn waters, it was decided to stav aboard until daybreak. In heavy surf they were taken off with some belongings by fishermen in a small launch. When eft'orts were made to float the collier under her own steam yesterday, the propeller shaft was luickled, blades stripped and rudder smashed. Her replacement value is estimated at £200,000.
