Social Function To Mark End Of Bowling Season
The Otaki Railway Bowling Club cecently held a social function in the Druids' Hall to mark the windiip of its season, when trophies were presented by the Mayor, Mr. C. F. Atmore. There was a splendid atten-dance. Prior to calling on Mr. Atmore, the president of the club, Mr. H. Watts, extended a cordial weicome to all present, and expressed pleasure at seeing such a fine representation from the Otaki Ladies' Bowling Club. Mr. Watts congratuiate'd this live body on the exceilent progress made during the season, making special reference to the three one-day tournaments staged for lady bowlers. The speaker considered their efforts an-d the results attained were a grand achievement. both socially and financially, for a junior club. Valuable Trophies Won. Mr. A.'more congratulated the club on the ga'axy of talent it possessed, enabling it to win a variety of valuable trophies- -during the season. It was most noticeable, said Mr. Atmore, that whether it was a one-day tournament or a representative Dominion gathering the Railway club was always knocking at the door when the flna's were un for decision. The speaker made speciai reference to the beauliful trophies annexed by , fpur members, Messrs A. D. Webster, T. Webster, J. Mclntyre and O. Sy-mon-ds, in winning the Wel'ington Cen.re championship fours. It was a most creditable performance, he said. Never before had this coveted prize been won by a club outside Wellington'. The Coxon Rose BOwl from Castlecliff (Wanganui), the Webster Rose Bowl from Levin and the OUiver Shield from Otaki were other trophies sepured by club members throughout the year, while in Ihe centre pairs at the Wellington championships, besides winning the fours, the club's representatives, T. Webster and O. Symonds, had taken part in the semi-final play, to be beaten by the uKimate winners. In addition T. Webster iook nart in post section play in the centre singles, and O. Symon-ds was among the finalists in the champion of champion singles, while a rink comprising W. S. Hughes, A. D. Webster," L. Lambess and O. Manttan (president) extended thanks for the help and encouragement given, and expressed the hope that the men would continue to assist them in coaching and other ways. It was state-d that their presence at a conference in Auck'and prevented We lington Centre members and the club's delegate from being present. Plea-sing vocal and ins rumental items, followed by supper, brought a most pleasant evening to a close. Before dispersing the opportunity was taken of saying au revoir to - the club's energetic promoter. Mr. A. D. Webster, one the eve of his departure fcr Brisbane as a member of a rink seeking bowling honours in Australia. Good wishes for a successful visit were extended to him.
