State House Sanitation

A letter was received at Tuesday evening's meeting of the Shannon Borough Council from the Minister of Works, replying to the council's letter relative to pit-privies at the State house units in Shannon. The letter pointed out that several State units were, at present served by septic tanks and they had given considerable trouble. due to ground conditions militating against efficient soakage. A thorohgh investigation of ground conditions by the sinking of a test hole to a depth of 100 feet indicated that the' disposal of efiluent .from tanks by soakage -was unsatisfactory.. Asthe use of- pit-privies of suitable design and construction was favoured in similar circumstances elsewhere by the Department of Health, and the experience of the Housing Division in the use of pit-pfivies in other localities had been very successful, this method was adopted in the Shannon Borough. i Following a discussion it was agreed that the letter be referred to the Health Inspector. o
