Surprises in Victory Golf Tournament
AUCKLAND, May 13. There were several surprising results wheu the match-play events of the £700 Victory 'golf tournament began at the Titirangi Glub's course today; In the professional division the two Australian competitors, Y. O. Walker and R. Want, were both eliminated and A. J. Shaw was .defeated in the seeond round. In the amateur event E. W. Young, co-leader with D. L. Wo.ori in the amateur medal championship of Wednesday and Thursday, was beaten after leading A. R, Kitto by two up with four to play; L. B. Johnston, the outstanding amateur of last year 7s Victory Tournament, did not survivc the second round aind the national, am. teur ehampion of 1938, P. G. F. Smi' i. was beaten at the 21st hole by the, young New Plymouth competitor, B. D. Bamlield. Both the professional and amateur divisions of the match-play event were' advanced to the semi-iinhl stages. In the professional division the survivors aro A. E. Guy (Akarana) winner of the £150 lirst prize in the medal championship; J. Weir (Grange), James Gallo-„ way (Whangarei) and R. H. Glading (Christchurch). Guy will play Weir and Galloway Glading in the semiliuals. In the amateur division the semifinalists are the.New Zealand represen.tative from Christchurch D. L. Woon, : J. P. Ealpli (Remuera), F. Buckler (Remuera) and A. R. Kitto (Wanganui). Woon will play Raiph and Bue.kicr Kitto. The finals in both divisions 'vvill be plaved tomorrow.afternoon.
