WELLINGTON, May 13. The safest place xn New Zealand to "be abroad is Nelson. Palmerston North ranks fourth, and the most dangerous is Hamilton. These facts were revealed to your reporter today "by the Transport Department. The latest cotmplete fignres availahle for comparison are those for 1947. They show that road accidents per thousand of population totalled .9 in Nelson, 1.5 .in Dunedin, 1.8 in Invercargill, 2.2 in Palmerston North, 2.3 in Lower Hutt, 2.4 in Wanganui, and 2.5 in Christchurch. Wellington scored 2.8, Auckland 3.1, and Hamilton 3.3. In general women appear to he hetter drivers than men, and only 292 were involved in« accidents m 1947 compared with 4526 men, but Transport Department offLeers say it is not possible to say definitely that women are hetter drivers. They list these points: Women usually don't drive as fast as men. Male drivers while intoxiqated were involved in 50 accidents, but no women drivers had accidents while intoxicated. Generally women don't appear tp understand the right-hand rule as, well as men. Men p^obably drive greater di«tances in the course of a year and a good comparison is not readily obtainable owing to varying exposure to xisk. ^WWWWWWWWSAAAAAA/WWWWVW*
