1 . J* ■ — ■ The deputy-Mayor (Cr. B. Clayton) presided over Crs. V. J. Bateman, H. L. Norris, R. S. Downes, 'C. M. Croiiquest, L. G. Sayer and C. G. Wishart at the" usual fortnightly meeting of the Shannon Borough Council on Tuesday evening. Apologies for absence were received from the Mayor, Mr: D. A. Fitzger-a'-d, who arrived towards the end of the meeting, and Cr. H. Aitehison. In his report for the month of April, the district traffic inspector stated that no drlvers had been tested for driving licences and no accidents of a serious or minor nature had been brought to his notice. -A general patrol had been maintaine'd on the roads and it had been noted that the standard of driving had been good, especially over the Easter holiday period and the Anzac weekend. The traffic during the month ha'd been much heavier, but this could be accounted for by the . holidays observed during the month. The report was received by the council. Advice was received from . the engineer compiling the water supply scheme that the complete proposals would be in the hands of the council towards the end of the present month. The Municipal Association, writing with regard to by-laws, said that the work of preparing model by-laws was well advanced in the drafting stages, but there was still a great deal of revision to be done and there would be many more meetings of the various committees which would have the function of settling drafts, subject to flnal settlement by council. When this was done here would be some further delay while the printing was comnleted.
In reporting on the town's two jubilee celebrations next month, the town ckrk, Mr. J. T. Bovis, said that excellent progress was being made by both the school and the lootball club committees. He had received an offer of the loan of street bunting for the occasion. It was resolved that the council make arrangements for extra lighting displays if possible. * The town clerk tahled a report showing that the cost of metalling, grading and sealing maintenance work carried out on the borough streets to date amounted to £630. It was reported that a further supply of metal was required, but the matter was held over until a meeting of the finance committee is held. The meeting is to take place next Tuesdav evening. Authority was given the reserves committee to clean up the borough section next to the Council Chambers and also for further cleaning at the cemetery. The chairman of the building committee, Cr. Bateman, reported that two applications for building alterations before the council were in order and they were approved. The first was from Mr. G. E. Booker, on behalf 'of Mr. H. Aitchison, for dwelling repairs and the second was from Messrs Allen Motors, Ltd., for an extention to their hus garage.. Cr. Sayer, chairman of the works committee, reported that the work of topdressing the streets would have to cease owing to unfavourabie weather conditions. Sueh items as metal prices and grading of streets were discuss'ed and left in the kands of Cr. Sayer for his attention. Accounts passed for payment amounted to £443 19s 9d. The major items were as follows: Wages £60 17s lld, interest coupons £38 10s 8d, Shannon Transport £118 ls 8d, and Manawatu County Council £164 3s 5d.
