A.A. And C. Club's Plans For Cyclists

The winter activities'' of the Levin Ath etic and Cyciing Clut, wiil begin 011 Saturday wnen the ciub's fn.y road cyciing contesti will be staged with a race to Manakau and baek. Time'd to leave the Grand Hotel at 1.30 p.m., the flnishing point will be at -the Levin School. The club is to be congrauu'ated on its decision.to cater for the cyciists during the winter, as this will fit them for the sirenuous programme of niajor events planned for the summer with the Empire Games as the impetus. The annuai Palmerston North to' Bu-!s and re.urn race, to be he'dj on August 27 will be run in two divisions, the .iunior in the morning and senior in the afternoon. The annuai rneeting of the West Coast Centre was held at Wanganui reeently, when the Palmerston North Club was successful in having three of its 'delegates elected to prcminent positions. They are: Messrs P. Manning and C. Stagpo'e, president and secretary) respecdvely, and B. Gorner, cen-1 tre handicapper. Messrs D. Yeates! and W. Galloway are the Levin! Ciub's de'egates to the centre. ! Centre Programme. At this rneeting it was deeided to . alloca e to the Eltham Club thej West Coast road championships on® October 15. The juniors will face over 25 miles and the seniors over 62^ miies, the latter being the dis- i tance of the Empire Games road' race. It was a'so deeided to hold the final triPl of the West Coast rideiv on November 5. the selected riders from this centre then going on to j Auckland for the -New ZeaianU! trials. • j As yet the course for the West Coast trials has to be deeided and! it was left to the incoming com- 1 mi'tee to make this decision. i The Marton road-racing c'ub has' been given the option of conduct- { ing this vear's race for the Hope! Gibbons Shield and if they desirei to run it, the race wiT be deeided toward the latter end of July. Hints For Riders. The foilowing comment by "Sprint," the scribe for the Pa!-! merston North Club, is well worth j reprinting for the benefit of all in-| lending riders regarding eyc e ! equipment for road racing. "Your i cycle must be in first-class condi-l tion and if a fixed wheei is usedl one rear brake is necessary. With! a fr&e wheel two brakes are neces-t sary. All machines must be fittedj with a bell and reflector. You are! also advised to carry a repair out- | fit and pump in case of punctures. t as it is not always possib.e to have a car follow each race."
