Aratangata Drain Bridge Problem For County
, An application by the ManawatuOroua" River Board for the Horowhenua County Council to facilitate repairs to t'he bridge over the Aratangata Drain was responsiole . for consideratole discussion at yestei'day's meeving of the council. The board wrote advising that' it was willing to contribute £15 to-^ wards the cosc of the repairs, and requested that a good job be made of them and that they be done at an ear.y date. "I fee that we have to be rather . caref ui here," remarked the ehairman, Mr. A. M:. Co quhoun-. "Nd douot the bridge was built to allow farmers co cross the drain, but now it has to carry 10 tons of earthmoving machinery." • •Cr. D. K. Guy: If we are going to do any work, we should limit the load to three tons. We shpuld he safeguarded against ' all the heavy machinery which" goes across it. The engineer, Mr. W. H. Fraser, pointed out that the council, had no reat moral obugation to spend a great deal of money on the bringe. The ratepayer* for whom il had been constructed had sold hjs land and the river board now ownea a portio'n. He was also of the opinion that if any work was done the load should be limite'd. The macter was referred to the works committee.
