SHOTS FIRED AT HOUSE

A sensationai sliooting incident is alieged to have taken piace in the vicinity of Akitio Beach; near Pongaroa, on Saturday , night when, aceording to reports from the area, a nuinber of shots variousiy estimated at between eight and ten„ were fired into a house Although the dwelling was oceupied at the time no ,one was injured. Go.nstable Webbyyof Pongaroa, rushed to the scene and tater arrested a man in possession of a firearm at Akitio Beach and took him into custody. The poliee were reticent on the subject last night but Superintendent TI. J. Joyce when questioned by the Press admitted that there had beeh a shooting affray in the vicinity of Pongaroa* that about eight bullets had been fired into a house and that a man had been taken into custody. He said that Deteetive-Sergeant j. H. Alty, of Palmerston North, wotild visit Pongaroa early this morning .to investigate the incident, and that the man held in custody would probably appear before the court at Pongaroa when the pblice would request a remanil to Palmerston North. It was not possible to obtain from the poliee any background picture leading up to the shooting, but private sources informed the Press that there had been an altercation in the hotel at Pongaroa that afternoon. . The two men involved had been separated, but later on the road home they had resumed the dispute, leading to oue of them 'being knocked to the ground. These two men, it was alieged, were the parties later involved in the incident.
