Two Croquet Clubs Hold Official Closings
The Otaki Municipal Croquet Club's offtcikl closing took place on Thursday last in beautiful weather, when there "was a representative gathering which would have been much larger but for a strong counter attraction. This was a Women's Institute Federation meeting, and several apologies for non-attend-ance were received by the club. In the absence of the president of the Municipal Club, Mrs. A. Wilson, the president of the Otaki Croquet Club, Mrs. A. F. Cook, welcomed all visitors and congratulated the club on a most successful and enjoyable season. Mrs. Cook then presented trophies w.on during the season. The Byron Brown senior championship award went to Mrs. E. T. Silverwood, the Richards Cup (junior handicap), to Mrs. S. Brooks, the Brandon Rose Bowl to Mrs. Silverwood, the club gold brooches to Mesdames Silverwood and L. G. Gimblett, and the McBeth trophy to Mrs. Gimblett. Following the presentation of trophies, half-houriy games were played, Mesdames F. E. Gurney and R. Purvis being the winners, after which an enjoyable afternoon tea brought a happy afternoon to a close. The pretty green of the Otaki Croquet Club was en fete recently for the club's closing, when members and friends assembled for a social afternoon. The president, Mrs. A. F. Cook, wearing a floral frock and fur coat, received the guests, among • whom were many past members, as well as visitors to the district. Games for all were the order of the first part of the afternoon until the adjournment for tea at 3.15 p.m. After a delicious repast had been partaken of, Mrs. Cook presented the prizes for the club's activities throughout the season. The president's doubles trophy was won by Mesdames W. Percival and S. 'Brooks, the runners-up being Mrs. R. Purvis and Miss C. Clarke. The points prize went to Mrs. F. E. Gurney, and the Ferns, donated by Mrs. L. G. Gimblett, were won by Mesdames Purvis and Percival. •Special thanks were accorded Mrs. Percival, the club's untiring secretary, and Mrs. D. McCready, popular club captain, to both of whom much of the success of the club is due. Competition winners for the afternoon were: — Aunt Sally, Mrs. C. P. Jenson; golf croquet, Mrs.. E. Cobb; French croquet, Mrs. McCready; hitting the targgt, Mrs. Gimblett. Mrs. C. Anderson, on behalf of the visitors, made a presentation to the president, while the pretty 3houlder sprays were the work of Mrs. C. P. Jensen.
