The Burnwell coal mine which was' taken over by °the State this week, is one of the largest privately owneri mines in the Reefton area. It' has been producing about 10,000 tons of coa! a year for the last 10 years. Staffed by 20 men, the mine will eventually be vvorked, it is understood, in conjunction with the adj'oining Central miiie which was also bought by tlie Mines Depart ment this year. Coal has been worked in this area for over- 40 years and the combined properties are expected to tai a fairly large coal field. On the Burn well lease alone it is reported some 500,000 tons of coal had been proved.
