Sugar Milk Industry Has Good Prospects
AUCKLAND, May 3. The lactose (sugat of milk) industry which this year brought New Zealanci about £250,000 in overseas funds, may well develop in the next decade to a figure three or four times that amountDr. L. Harding, Ph.D., managing director of Whey Produets Ltd., England, made this forecast before he left Auckland for England via Honolulu and the United States. Dr. Hardipg who, in 1932, evolved a method of separating lactose from whey, has been watching the operation of Dairy Produets Ltd. 's new faetory a,t Kapuni, near Hawera The faetory, in the first full season, produced £.150,000 worth of crude lactose for export. "In Taranaki there is more whey to the square mile than in any other part of the world," said Dr. Harding. "Same is fed to pigs but a lot has pre viously been poured down the drain.' He hopes a New Zeaiand export trade of refined lactose can be built' up with South America, South Africa, India and China. t . .
