BOROUGH BREVITIES
Pubiic Interest Shown In Affairs Of Council
When the Levin Borough Council held its meeting on Monday nigho it was not alone. Qccppying- the pubiic bench were a number of citizens, mostly members of . the Levin Junior Chamber of Commerce, who .attended as individua's and were interested observers pf lpcal body procedure. * * * A complaint that a large hole had been cut in the pinex of the Levin Park Domain grandstand, apparently by boys with a penknife, was made by the overseer, Mr. E. Lyceite. He suggested that fine meshed wire netting be placed along the area most apcessibie. It was time some action was taken against such offenders, said Cr. R. A. Frederikson. If caught, hey should be "rushed off to the police station and prosecutions brought against them." It was decided that a hardboard strip would be better as a proiection for the pinex, and the matter was referred to the works committee. * * * As winter was approaching he would like to know what the position was in fegard to extra street lighting, said Cr. W. Telford, during general discussion. Cr. R. A. Frederikson said that the Horowhenua Power Board had been faced wi.h a shortage of fittings, but was doing its best to proceed with the work as quickly as possible. * * * The shortage of pubiic halls was going to be of great inconvenience to the pubiic this winter, said Cr. Telford when recommending that the works committee be authorised to go into the possibi'ity of moving the centre nartition in the fcand room in Bath Street back 20 feet. If this was done it would- give more space and the hall cou d be put to a wider use, he said. * * * The provision of more bicycle stands in Oxford Street was again discussed, it being recommended that space be provided and marked off accordingly. It was stated that this would incur the loss of parking space for 10 cars — four on one side of the street and six on the other— but the Mayor, Mr. H. B. Burdekin, said that in his opinion there was ample new space further up Oxford Street and in the vicinity of the Police Station for car parking. Cr. D. J. Sweetzer asked if his request for the provision of bicycle stands outside the railway station and between the Post Office and butcher's shop in Weraroa haa been aceeded to. The borough overseer said that they had not yefc been instabed, but this would be done in the near future. * * * In future a person applying for a permit to built a house in the borough will be required to pay a deposit of £1.0, to be held by the council in Case of any damage being done to curbings and footpaths by the contractor's vehicles. It was stated that in most cases this deposit would be the contractor's responsibility, as it was he who applied for the permit. The borough had to protect its footpaths and it was a practice used by many other local bodies. * * * Opposing the proposed establishment of an auction mart for the selling of fowls on the ground that' it was to be in the central portion of the town, the health inspector, Mr. W. J. Guinan, sought the opinion of the council. - He had once before stopped another auction mart from similar activity on the same ground, he added. The town clerk, Mr. H. L. Jenkins, said the mart propesed to function in the Arcadia Hotel building and the inspector considered it wou'd constitute a nuisance siied right in the town. He was acting under a by-law in bringing the matter before the council. The council decided to uphold its inspector. * * * The availability of a trailer for the price of £87 10s was brought to the council's notice by Cr. Telford, who said that he thought it might be ideal if U was towed by and used in conjunction with the new tractor. ' Spoil graded by the tractor couM be taken away in the trailer and thus save a truck. The trailer had tipping apparatus, an important consideration. The council decided to appoint a sub-committee consisting of Crs. Telford, A. W. Parton and Sweetzer to inspect the trailer and purchase it if thought desirable.
