New State Coal Mine Has Big Potentialities
GREYMOUTH, May 3. ■ The Burhwell coal. mine, which: Was taken. over -by the State this week, is one of the largest private-ly-owned mines in the Reefton area has been producing about 10,000 tons of coal a year for the last ten years. 1 Staffed by 20 men, the mine will bventually be worked°, it is underwood, in conjunction with the adjoining Central mine, which was also bought by the Mines Department this year. Coal has been worked' in this area for over 30 years and the combined properties are expected to tap a fairly large coalfield. On the Burnwell lease alone it is reported that some 500,000 tons of coal have been proved*
