German Fear Of Russia As Hopeful Influence
The one over-riding factor which governed the -people of - -Western Getmany today was their fear Of Russia, said Lieut.-Colonel W. SMcKinnon, 'D.B.E., R.N.Z1A?F Of Wellington, speaking to the Levin Rotary ' C'ub yesterday. This, Coupied with their capacity to reconstruct their own economy, gave hope that they would be- able to re-establish them'selves as a reasonable sort of democracy. Af er outlining the boundaries of the four * zones in Germany, with Berlin as an island under fourpower control, Colonel McKinnon said that the purpose Of the British occupation "was twofold. Firstly, it was iO back the British Mi.itary Government and, secondiy, to ensure the integrity of Western Germany with respect to RuSsia. If the British forces were withdrawn from Germany today, the Russikns wouid Walk in. In a trip to Germany in July last he had travelled from Briiain to Holland by troop boat and then by troop train into Germany, said the speaker. That boat and train ran every night as part of the cost of maintaining the British Army of Occupation. "At this time the Dominions were winding up their overseas war commitments, but poor old Britain goes on maintaining substantial commitments in all parts of the world."
