Farmers' Economist Gets Into Trouble
Maoiawatu Federated Farmers' dairy section has decided to dissociate itseii from a statement made by their representative in the recent basic wage claims hearing before the Arbitration Court. _ ( Their representative, Mr. D. L. Martin, who is an economist attaehed to Federated Farmers, told the Arbitration Court under cross-examinafcion, that the farming industry could absorb the proposed increased wage eost th rough t'he presmit ruling prices. The annual conference of the dairy section in Palmerston North yesterday decided to write to headquarters asking that steps be taken to correct this stateiuent which, it was considered, was made in the heat of cross-examin- : ation. It was stated by members that Mr. Martin had eost New Zealand 's farmers thousands of pounds. The fear was eypressed that the eff'ecfe of the statement mig'ht be seriouo in future priee representations.
