Messrs. R. S. Antcliff And A. W. Parton Elected To Borough Council
The muncipal by-election held yesterday to fill- iwo vacancies on- the Levin Borough Council resulted in Messrs. R. S. Antcliff and A. W. Parton polling the highest figures on the preliminary count. It is understood that there are 'some 150 declaration votes to be counted and a second count was •being made today, but it is- unlikely that this will affect the result. * v ■ Mr. Antcliff topped the poll with 558 votes and Mr. ' Parton was elose behind with 500. The runner-up to these two was Mr. L. V. Trass, who polled 384 on the preliminary connt. A total -of 1446 persons exercised their right to vote Out of the 2938 eligible.
At 7-45 p.m. last night almost 200 persons gathered outside the Council Chambers waiting until 8.30 .p.m., when the results were released by the town clerk, Mr. H. L. Jenkins. The preliminary figures are as follows: — R. S. Antcliff 558 A. W. Parton 500 L. V. Trass 384 A. Shaw 261 N. Thornley 225 W. Seddon 192 F. Croot 155 R. A. Jones 125 E. Addressing the gathering after the results. had been announced, Mr. Antcliff thanked all those who hau supported him and expressed che hope that he would prove worthy of the trust. It had been a grand election, ahd he had enjoyed his association with the other candidates and the whole campaign. He congratulated Mr. Parton on his excellent scoring in the poll and also the other candidates on their good scores. The other successful candidate, Mr. Parton, congratulated Mr.. Antcliff on topping the poll and also the other candidates who had taken part. He would go forward to do his best for all sections of the community. He said he felt proud that this campaign had been abie to awaken such wonderful interest in municipal matters.
