SHANNON WIN FAST GAME AGAINST RAHUI

Both Shannon and Rahui seniors displayed good form in their game pn the Shannon Domain. Although Shannon carried off the honours "by eight points to six, both leams were evenly matched and the large gathering of spectators witnessed good, fast football. Doubtless the presence of three representative players in K. Tritt, D. Fuller and C. Mortim'er imbued Shannon with plenty of confidence, but RQhui's slogging forwards did their utmost to secure the honours for^their side. Shannon, however, got a greater share of the. ball and, wtih their backline showing pleasing combinatiori and not afraid to toss out long passes, the Rahui backs had f ew opportunities. Both teams gave a sound display,_ there •beihg many occasions when play- ) ers rrom both sides earried the" ( plaudits of the crowd. Shannon kept play fairly close to : the oppo«ing 25 throughout the ; greater part of the first half, although the first score followed a , r.un in which Rahui penetrated Shannon's 25, but Fuller intercepted and topped off a Smart piece j of work by crossing the line, N. j jCallesen, with a superb kick, added the extra points and shannon led , 5—0. The next thrill came when Fuller snapped up the ball from behlnd Hhe scrum and tried for a drop(Continued" on Page 7.)

Shortly after Shannon crossed again, but the referee ordered a iscrum, following which many long passes w.ere a feature of Shannon's Idisplay. Rahui forwards in Spiers, , Pox and Watts were working hard, 1 ably backed up by Merwood, Waaka and Wallis, but the opposing defence could not be penetrated successfully. After 30 minutes of nlay a penalty saw B. Wallis score three points for his side with a grand kick. Shannon 5, Rahui 3. The visitors retaliated- and W. Johnson had to force to save more than once. The second spell saw Rahui all out to make up the leeway, but the visitors' full-back, Mortimer, was p'aying a grand game. Rahui kept up the attack, however, and continued to gain ground, and it was Shannon's turn to go on the defensive. For Rahui in turn W. Johnson and Wallis were within inches of going over the line. Rahui had a chance to equalise when a Shannon player was penalised for picking up in a scrum, only for Wallis to miss the kick. Play at this stage veered sharply from end to end, with the Shannon winger, Poutu, finally scoring after the ha1! had gone from one wing to the other, Callesen missed the kick. A further thrill was ahead for Rahui supporters when A. Winterburn sent a nice grubber kick over the full-back's head, with three Rahui players hard down on him. 1 Unfortunately, a knock on resulte'i. Rahui kept up the attack and Wallis was rewarded with a we1!earned try. Again fortune did not smile too kindly as he was hurt when scoring and Brad^y took the kick, which went astray. Shannon 8, Rahui 6. Tme game ended with the score unaltered. Mr. C. E. Wiseley controlled the game.
