CHEISTCHURCH, April 22. A prisoner from the Paparua prison who had been taken along with other , riMmers to the Christchurch Public ILqutal for treatment, made a deter1 liaed but shortlived bid for liberty torbay. He was traced by a member of ti •• detective staff at Central police sta-'-•■n and arrested after a sprint down a -it y lane. About 10.30 a.m. it was noticed that t >* ])risoner was missing and a police clt was instituted immediately the c-'-ape was reported. A general waimimi was given aml preparations were made to get in toueh with country cusiiui'ts. These proved unnecessary* for Acting-Detective L. W. Jackson traced the iuan to a picture theatre. The detective waited until the Iights went on for the interval about 2.30 p.m. and vhon the prisoner came out Detective Jackson apprehended him. The prisoner and his eaptor started off for the police station when the prisoner made niuiiher dash for liberty. He raced aiong Chancery Lane towards Gloueester Btreet with Detective Jackson m pursuit. The detective shouted a warnbig to a eivilian who stopped the prmoner at the end of the lane. There tvas a short scuffle and Detective Jackson soon had his man safely in custody. Later in the afternoon, Desmond Patrick Eagan, aged 25, appeared before Mr. Kaymond Ferner S.M. on a cliarge of escaping from lawful custody. He was remanded to May 9.
