Xalioiialist 51st Army on the south bank oi' the Yangtze. After siie was hit the Aniethyst stopped and hoisted a white tiag. Thinking the Aniethyst might be a Chinese warship, 51st Army headquarters eommunicated witli the Chinese naval authorities in Chin- s kiang. Arniv headquarters were tohi no Chinese warship was inj tliat vicinitv, consequently the, army did not give the Aniethyst eovering fire L'rom the south bank. j After a short while the Aniethyst got under way again, sailing in the direetion of Nanking. Communist artillery units imniediately reopened the bonibardnient. The fate of the vessei l'rom that time is unknown. A Chinese gunboat sent from Chinkiang failed to find the sloop.
