Horowhenua Nominations For Maori All Blacks

Three Horowhenua footballers, Gordon Sciascia (back) and W. Lincom and H. Ngaiana (forwards) are to be nominated for the Maori AL Black team co tour Australia in May and June next. At a meeting of the Horowhenua Rugby Unions management committee on Tuesday night a circular letter from the New Zeaiand union inviled nominations of p ayers eligible and avai able for selection. Nominations were to be made on last season's performances, commented the president, Mr. R. L. Robinson, and he thought the matter was o/ne forpJie sole seniorseiector, Mr. D. J. Oliver. The. names were undoubtedly required urgently and Horowhenua did not want.to lose the opportunity of having any of its piayers missed, said Mr. C. E. Wiseley (primary schoo's' representadve) . He suggested that the selector consider possible piayers during the evening and submit these names before the meeting concluded, thus enab.'ing hem to be approved and sent forward without delay. j-.ater Mr. O.iver announced -that the three piayers already mentione'd, on last season's performances, swere worthy of nomination. The commktee gave its approval and decided to forward their names. Bebbington Shield Game. A letter rrom the Dannevirke sub-union accepted Horowhenua's lOffer to withstand a challenge ?or the Bebbington Shield on July 9. Permission Lo piay rugby football was app.ied for by R. R. Findlater. It was stated that he had played !le"ague for five years, but never rtigby. It was resolved to forward ; the application to ihe New Zeaiand Union for its decision. The Shannon Borough Councii intimated its wPlingness to grant the union the use of the Shannon Domain for the season at the proffered rental of 10 per cent. of Dhe gross gate takings. Petrol licences for travelling teams was the subject of a circular from the New Zeaiand union, which advised the union to apply to the Oil Fuel Controller for its requirements. The secretary, Mr. J. E. FuFarton, told the meeting that last season the licence, which was for 150 gallons, had not been issued ! until games had almost concluded. | He was authorised, to make appliication for a licence on the same basis as last year. Piayers' Insurance Scheme. Details of a scheme of p ayers' insurance now offered by one of the interesied companies was before the meeting. The premiums were set out at the "following rates for each team for a season, with an additional £1 ner team to cover travelling to and from matches: Ssniors £5, juniors £4, third grade £3 and fourth grade £2 10s. The •cover for death, and loss of any two. limbs was: Seniors £300, juniors £225, third grade piayers £150 and fourth grade piayers £100. Other benefits were also svated. "It would appear that rugby is a very dangerous game indeed," remarked the president amidst laughter. On his suggestion the matter was referred- io the insurance committee ifor a report, Mr. Wise'ey commenting that the premiums were very similar to those being paid to the unicn's own scheme. It was decided to allow up to £12 fqr the season • to the St. John Ambulance Brigade towards the purchase of petrol for its officers to travel to games. Appreciative reference was made to the work of the brigade on the various foolball fields of the district. After a short discussion of a report by the secretary that some of he union's cups were not engraved up to date, it was left to him to arrange with clubs holding the trophies to have the work carried out at the expense of the union.
