CIVIC RESPONSIBILITIES.

Wm.

SEDDON.

(To the Editor) Sir, — Civic affairs necessitate a study of political science and economics which, after all, represents: 3 libera' education. All our problems in life have brnne economic or, political significance. J British democracy means per-^ sonal liberties, property righ's, the'' reward of labour and the duties of local body government and citizenrhip. These latterr-problems do not interest a'l people^ but they have to be faced by some thoughtful persons who are willing to' accept the iesponsibility and who have minds broadened and enriched by study and ■ discussions at mee -ings. Democracy means that every person is expected to take his or her share of the burden. It is one of the duties of the Ratepayers' Associa■tion to assist in interesting citizens as to their responsibilities. Political science is not for the formation of rival systems but for playing a part in improving fhe. community. The ra.epayers' apr proach to civic affairs is for impartial criticism and for ,a more informed opinion on everyday problems as they affect our daily lives. We must be more realistic to find the true motives . and minimise emotional appeals, trying to find the practical and most beneficial interest for the community in general. Students of political science do not take a parochial a..titude. Whether pub'ic life is indulged in either professionally or voiuntarilyj out of one's own convictions, anyi citizen who undertakes public re- J sponsibilities is doing a most difficult and thankless job1 in the community. - We may all feel superior to each other, but if we 'eave civic responsibilities to the other fellow wp have only ourselves to blame. Vnnrs etc..
