R.S.A.'s Views On Memorial Project
The Otaki Returned Services' Association had advised the War ' Memorial Committee that it had fully discussed the various sites for the war memorial and favoure'd the exuension of the .existing domain. This was reported to a recent meeting of the Otaki Borough CouncL by the Mayor, Mr. C. F. Atmore. He was commenting following the reading of a letter from the Department of Internal Affairs subsequent to a visit by its officers. It said that although the decision was one for the council to make, the land contiguous to the present domain was more suitable from a community centre point of view. If a close vote was recorded then the R.S.A. favoure'd a poll of ratepayers on the two sites, said Mr. Atmore in reply to Cr. E. J. Cook. He had stated that many expressions of opinion to him following reaffirmation of the decision to acquire the site adjacent to the courthouse also favoured a poll. Mr. Atmore said that he personally favoured the extension. He added that if the council supported the site near the courthouse, the next step was for a general outline of the whole scheme to be prepared showing the land, contempiated buildings, etc. Sufficient particulars would require to be given so that the plan could be visualised, and a statement an'd evidence cf support would require to be furnished to the Internal Affairs Department. Following further discussion, it was decided to get the general plan prepared and then submit an mitial application for approval and the granting of the subsi'dy. A subcommittee was appointed to prepare the general outline.
