Successful Drive on Guerrilla Forces

Reeeived Tuesday, 11 a.m. ATHENS, April 18. Front-line dispatches said today that an army drive this morning, preceded by a clever midnight action, completely cleared the entire area of strongly-fortified guerrilla positions south of the Sarantaporos River in Grammos. More than one hundred guerrillas were slain and sixty taken prisoner. Dispatches said that army commandos took guerrillas defending Mount Kanzikon by surprise and after savage fighting, in which knives, hand grenades and bayonets were used, the entire guerrillas force has been eliminated. Athens police announced that they had arrested 73 Communists in Piraeus who were actively engaged in subversive activities, recruiting for the guerrilla army, and helping and harbouring Communists who were wanted by the police.
