Borough Administration

The usual fortnightly meeting of "the Shannon Borough Council was helci on Tuesday evening, when the Mayor, Mr. D. A. Fitzgerald, presided over Crs. B. Clayton, V. J. Bateman, H. L. Norris, R. S. Downes, C. M. Cronquest, L. G. Sayer, C. G. Wishart and H. Aitchison. A letter enclosing a cop'y of its 1948 balance-sheet was received from the Horowhenua Rugby Union. The use of the Shannon Domain during the coming season was sought and the union offered 10 per cent. of the gross gate takings by way of rental. The request was granted. In reply tc the council's letter relative to bylaws, the New Zealand Standards Institute stated that this matter was receiving attention after which the council would be further advised. The Mayor reported that he had interviewed an officer of the institute during a recent visit to Wellington, and on his - recomm|end!ation the town clerk' was directed to contact the Municipal Association regarding the adoption of bylaws. The Shannon branch of the Returned Services' Association extended an invitation to the Mayor and councillors to attend the Anzac service in the Renown Theat're on Anzac Day. The invitation was accepted and it was agreed that the Mayor and Cr. Norris lay the citizens' wreath on the Cenotaph. * After giving notice of motion at the previous council meeting, Cr. Cronquest moved that in future the meetings of the council terminate at 9.30 p.m. unless in cases of extraordinary business, when the time could be extended by resolution. ,This was seconded by Cr. Norris and carried. It was also resolved that the meetings be commenced at 7 p.m. during the winter months. The town clerk was directed to call tenders for the renting of the borough sections for one year. Regarding section 322 (Nathan Terrace) it was resolved that the council .pay half the cost of erecting a dividing fence. This matter was left in the hands of the chairman of the works committee, Cr. Sayer, to attend to. On the motion of Cr. Clayton, it was resolved to write to the Shannon Cricket Club congratulating it on winning the Hall Shield- this season. It was also resolved to write to Lieut.-Colonel Sharp congratulating him on being awarded the O.B.E. The chairman of the buildiiig committee, Cr.
