Maintenance Of Gear Road Problem For County
Complaining that the condition of Gear Road. Te Horo, was unsatisfactbry, three residents wrote Ietters to yesterday's meeting of the Horowhenua Ccuncil Council. The road had a high camber on it andj the beach metal, which was all that | had been put on it for the past five years, rolled down after the grader had been over it, said Mr. C. H. Miils. The rocky foundation was showing through in many p'aces, he added. The other 'two Ietters ; were from Messrs A. E. Bates and J . R. Aldworth, and were on similar lines. The council was asked to. take some action in the matter. | He agreed. that the road was in j a very bad state, commented Cr. R. W. Jenkins in supporting the] application. This was a road where something would have to be done shortly, said the chairman, Mr. A. M. Colquhoun. In the construction of the -Gear esta'.e roading a great deal of dam- j age was going to be done to it, and i he considered the work should bel left until the council had asked the Works Department to make some contribution. The council could then carry out an improvement. The ietters stated the position fairly, remarked the engineer, Mr. W. H. Fraser. The road had reached such a state that maintenance work was not enough, and it really required rebuilding. However, a great deal of heavy trafffc could be expected to go over it in the near future. The chairman: I would not like to suggest doing anything yet. ■ He thought the' time had - como when the council should consider using some pit metal with the beach metal, remarked Cr. L. F. Brown. - Cr. J. D. Aitchison suggested that provision for the work should be made. in the annual estimates. It was decided to reply to the let1 ters, stating that the council wouM be carrying out improvement work as soon' as oossible.
