Badminton Club's Annual Meeting

There was a goo'd attendance at the annuai general meeting of the Shannon Badminton Club. wKieh wa? held in the Druids' . HaU on Mondav. The- retiring "president, Mr. V. E. Tippler, presided over the Qrst portion of the meeting. The balance sheet for the nast ''eason was read b.v the treasuver. Mr. T. S. Downes, and showedf that although the cluh emerge-d even in its finances. there was still a favourable credit halance in the banking account. The balance sheet was adopted. \Inward corresnondence was read bv the secretarv. Mr. A. S. Hyde, who also nresented the balance aheet of the Horowhenua Badminton Association. In his renort on the club's act-iv-ity over the past year, the president congratu1ated the club on a most succe°sful season. He oointed out that although the clifh had not been in the running for the Horowhenua comnetitions, both the A and B grade teams had upheld the honour of the club. He also mentioned the difficulties sometimes experienced in securing both plavers and transnort for competition ^ames outside Shannon. Mr. Tippier went on to renort that the comnetitions had done m.uch. to educate the vounger nlayers- and give them the confidence and experience, which was necessary to make a successful badmin+on nlayer. "If it is only for this reaso-n, I wouid like to see the club remain affihated to the association," said Mr. Tippler. He then extended the cluh's congratulations , to those cluhs who were successful in winning the Benning and Associafion Cuns last season. The oresident also congratulated the winners of the local competitions and also those who were unsuccessful, pointing out that it was oniy ^he spirit of entering that enahled the sport to carry on. Outlining the financial position, Mr. Tippler mentioned that new equipment had drained th© club's resources,somewhat, but with the support of the older players who Iwould he on the court again this season and the number of new members, to whom he extended a welcome. the club would have a good season this year. At this stage the. president asked that appreciation be placed on record" of the excellent work which had been done for the sport by Miss Gwen jForbes, who had now left the dis'trict, and Mr. Lester Burling, two of the foundation members of the club. He wished them every suecess for the future and hoped that some time it would he the club's pleasure to see them return to the courts to play the game which they had done so much to establish. Mr. Tippler then extended congratulations to Miss A. Pedersen, one of the senior members, who is shortly to he marrie'd. All joined in wishing Miss Pedersen every happiness for the future. The president men- j tioned the annual dance which was held at the end of last season, and expressed thanks to those who had worked to make it the success it was. In conclusion, Mr. Tippler extended thanks to the members of his committee who had helped with the successful running of the club 'ast year. He also thanked the neighbouring clubs for their in-

vitation to foe present at their ' opening nigh'ts. Election Of Officers. As Mr. Tippler was not offering himself for re --election as president, Mr. T. S. Downes moved a vote of thanks to him for the efficient manner in which he had carried out his- duties over the pasfe seasop. This was carried by acclamation. The following were the elected officers for the coming season: — President: Mr. C. D. Gyde; vicepresident: Mr. D. Richards; . secretary: Miss B. Gardner; treasurer: Mr. T. S. Downes; club captain: Mr. H. Pope (subject to his approval) ; vicecaptain: Mr. S. E. Hyde; official coach: Mr. V. E. Tippler; committee-: 'Mrs. A. S. Hyde, Misses J. Pigo'tt, D. Rit-chie and J. Wharrie and Mr. D. Pedersen. Followine: a discussion it was resolved that the club again affihate with the Horowhenua Badminton Association, while the appointment of delegates was left over until a later meeting, the president and one other member representing the club at the annual meeting of the association. It was resolved that the delegates ask that the teams for inter-club matches he restricted to eight members, otherwise it might he impossible, owing to transport difficulties, for the club to field a team. Other recommendations were also made. None of the present motions on the minutes regarding subscrip-tions and casual players were rescinded, but it was pointed out that iGwould be necessary to pay hall hire for Sunday play owing to the amount of light being used late in the afternoon. Fees for Sunday play were held over in the meantime. The preparation of the court and equipment p-rior to opening night was left in the hands of the committee. It was agreed that the clpb would officially open its season on Monday, May 2, and that invitations be sent to neighbouring clubs. A practice night is to he held on Thursday, April 28. A vote of thanks to the chair concluded the business of the meeting.
