Received Tuesday, 7 p.m. WASHINGTON, April 11. The United States Air Secretary. Mr. W. Stuart Symington, told the House armed services suh-committee today that American pilots had flown hundreds of miles hourly faster than the speed of sound, since the sonic barrier was first pierced in 1947. The speed of sound is about 660 miles hourly at 40,000 feet and ahout 760 miles hourly at sea level. Mr. Symington said present facilities were totally inadequate to handle research problems posed by supersonic flight. The sub-committee is considering a Bill to authorise the eonstruction of wind tunnels and other lacilities for research into supersonic flight problems.
