Death Of First Headmaster Of Levin School

The death has occurred at the age of 86 years of Mr. Robert J. ^ope, who was the first headmaster of the Levin Primary School. The schoox was opened for the1 re.ception of pupiis on February 24, i89u, with Mr. Pope in charge. Of shat first day he wrote the -following initial entiy in the log hook: "School opened this morning, the attendance being three. There is no blackboard, teacher's desk or ^halk in the schoo -rocm.. After ^aking down the names in the register the children were dismissed .vith instructions to attend sharp it nine o'c.ock tomorrow." In memory of the late Mr. Pope, the flag at the schooi was flown at naif mast today.
