No Settlement Yet Over Referee Appointments
It wou'd appear out of order to accept a new motiin overriding a motion passed at a special general mes'ting, said the president oi the Horowhenua Rugby Union, Mr. R L. Ro'cinson, when* the ' questicn of. whether or not the committee would renounce its c^im to a representative on the 'appointment board of the Horowhenua Referees' As^ocia'ion was discussed at a meeting of the management committee l«st nieht. In a letter t'o the union, the association exnressed fs desire to make appointments as previously and nofi, as decided at the special general meeting of the union, in conjunction with a member of the union. It stated that it would be quite ^Teised t"> eei a union representative appointed as a sitting member of the association, but if the reoresenta'tive was a member of t'he appointments board it ■ wou'd nrefer that the union make the appointmehts itself. He personahy thought that t" ia\i a representative as a sitting member of the association woifid provide a good link between the two bodies said Mr. Robinson. He ha'd confidence in the association °nd fiiought it would be better to let them run their own business. The union was busy enough with hs own affairs, without* having to lelect referees. In reply to a question from Mr. A. Wa t (Rahui) as to what exactly .was the otj ection to the apnointment, the associatioii's delegate, Mr. J. A. Zuppicich, said that the cssociation fel. there was a principle involved and the referees were firm in thair opininn. Thev thought the right to appoint referees was theirs and theirs a'one. If, however, the union decided to ake over the appointments, the referees, he thought, wouid be 100 per cent. behhrd it. There was no c'esire on their part to ho'd up footbalh The idea in making the apnointm ent was originally to show that the union was taking an interest in the association. said Mr. A. Haley (treasurer). It was dme in all good faith, but i;: aiopsared to have bounced back.cn the onion. The question had nothing to d"> with persoiialities or any club, s^id Mr. C. E. Wise'ev (schools' repres nfaVvpi It was solety a question of princ'iple. Could nct a denuti'ion cbnsistina: of the ir,esid°nt and secretary meet the association and see if a comprjniise c u)d be reached. askMr. E.-J. Cook (Otaki h Ihwas decided that this ac ion he taken.
