Hotel Destroyed By Fire

AUCKLAND, April 10. The Aratapu Hotel, six miles from Dargaville, was destrSyed by fire shortly after 8 o'eloek last night. The guests, staff and licensee, Mr. T. Kneebone, were absent at the time. L'ocal residents salvaged some gear from the hotel. The Dargaville Fire Brigade attended the fire but had difficulty in securing Water from the nearest supply, a stream over half a mile distant. The cause of the fire is not known. By 10.30 p.m. the building was gutted, Part of the Foley Estate, the Aratapu Hotel was the newest in the Northern Wairoa distriet, being built about 10 years ago. A wooden building, it consisted of eight rooms on-one floor. Plans had been made for additional rooms to be erected when a permit was procur^ble. The hotel was built after its predecessor, which stood on anotner site in the distriet, was destroyed by fire. This building had 30 rooms. The hotel was insured for about £2500.
