Sheep Dogs Suffocated On Train
AUCKLAND, April 8. Two of the team of six priceless Scottish collies wbose sheep dog demonstrations have earned the admiration of thousands of people at agricultural shows throughout New Zealand, died of suffoeation in a railway waggon. They were the property of Mr. R. Fortune, of Timaru, who was, taking them to Sydney where they were booked to give displays at the Royal Show. The dogs were being consigned in two specially made crates from "Timaru to Auckland where they were to be shipped by the Wanganella which left for Sydney on March 31. Eaeh of the erates contained three dogs. At Wellington the crates were stowed under other freight in a waggon on the express goods train for Auckland. When the truek was unloaded at Auckland two of the collies were dead but the other four appeared to be none the worse for their experience. The district traffic manager of railways at Auckland, Mr. R. Boswell, confirmed the fate of the dogs. He said the crates had been put in a covered waggon and unfortunately other goods had been packed in with them. He did not think the Department was entirely to blame as the size of the crates and -amount of ventilation allowed had to be taken into consideration.
