Life More Precious Than Few Minutes
WELLINGTON, April 8. "It seems to me poor odds to stake your life to save a few minutes. No time was ever that precious," commented the1 Minister of Transport, Mr. Hackett, to-day when disclosing details of the loss of life on the roads during the first three months this year. "Forty-nine people died as a result of traffic accidents in the first three months of this year," said Mr. Hackett. "This is the same as during the first quarter of 1948. Of those kiired 31~were motorists, eight motor cyclists, six cyclists and four pedestrians. "The real tragedy of these iigures, ' ' he said, ' ' and that not one of these fatalities need have occurred — every one could have been avoided if someone had taken a little more care." Mr. Hackett enjoined every one to take extra care to avoid acGidents during the Easter holidays. With the increaeed risk of an 'accident over this period, additional caution would bQ needed, he said. "I would appeal to all road users, and that means everyone, to make safety their watehword."
