Fines And Penalties In Levin Court
The calendar of business at the month'v sitting of the Magistrate's Court in Levin yesterday Was a comparatively light One. Among the cases dealt with by Mr. "A. M.' Goulding, S.M., were the following. GUido de 'Menech, Leslie' Sydnev Whiteman, Frank Webster and Richard Owen Roberts were charged ■ with being in possession Of liquOr in the vicinity of • sC dance hail. Evidence of. finding defendants consuming liquor near the Manakau Hall while dances- were in ^rogress Was given bv Constables W. R. Gillespie and A. T. Ke^. Each defendant was fined £2, with 10s costs. Being in possession. of an unlawful weatjon cost NOel Owen Taylor 10s, with 10s costs, and an order Was made for its COnfiscatloh. Acting Sergeant V. G. Arnold said that while with the armed-services overseas Taylor had taken a pistol from a German oflicer, retaining it as a souVenir. . ,
Excessive Speed. Hor Gee Leong paid a penalty of £2 10s, with 12s costs, for exceeding the speed limit in a heaVy mOtor vehicle. Traffic Inspector R. L. Mason said he had Checked defendan't speed qt^ 40 m.p.h. and the truck was carryihg gOods. Also exceeding the speed limit, John Procter was fined £3, with 10s 'costs. Traffic Inspector W. C. Shaw
told the court that defendant's speed was 45 m,p.h. in an empty bruck, Mr. .Bergih, who appeared for Procter, said that it was-a Horowhenua show day. Defendant was late and was hurrying to get home. On a similar charge Rohert James Clarence Church was fined £3, with 10s costs. Inspector Shaw said defendant Was travelling in an empty truck at 45 m^Ji. This had also happened on show day. For defendant, Mr. j. P. Bertram'said it was the last day of the show and there had been a great deal of stock to transport. Defendant ' was hurrying to complete the work and had not done *so until 10.30 p.m. Charged with exceeding the Speed limit Of 35 m.p h." .With a trailer, James Patrick Casey was fined £3, with 10s costs. Inspector Mason said he was patrolling south of Levin when defendant had overbaken him in a car drawing a trailer. He had checked the speed at 45 m.p.h. Exceeding the speed limit in a restricted area was- the charge against Barrymore Clifton Williams. Inspector Shaw said he was oa trolling the Levin borough on show day and saw defendant riding a motor-cyCle, with a pillion rider,' at an excessive speed: He; h'ad waved to: i Williams to redtice' Ms sneed, but he had ndt done - so. Checking his speed, he found it to be 43 m.p.h. 'and Williams had ^assed over three pedestrian cross"rngs and seven intersections. The magistrate fihed him £4, With 10s costs. Defective Brakesr Allan Robert Woodmass was fined £1 10s, with 10s costs, for having a defective hand-brake, It had. been found to take 140. feet to stOjp the Vehicle instead of the regulaticin 70 "eet, advised Inspector Mason". In the case of Athol Burt Francis Mather, who was charged with baving defective foofcbrakes, a fine of £1 10s, -with 12s costs, was im"osed. Inspector Mason told the court that it had taken defendant 52 feet to stop the vehicle when it should have been not more than 40 feet.
