GREYMOUTH, April' 6. Pleading guilty to six charges of wilfully making false returns under the Land and Income Tax Act in the past six years, George Alfred Webster, aged 72, described as a retired umbrella maker, was fined £5 on each charge by Mr. F. F. Reid. S.M., in the Magistrate's Court today. It was stated by counsel for the Commissioner of Taxes that the fa'se returns represented a total deficienc-y in tax of £681. The magistrate said that in respect of one or two years the amounts were substantial, and he found difficulty in understanding how anyone corid hfive 1 misunderstood the position. However, in view of counsel's remarks, the magistrate thought it fair to accept the case as one of an uneducated man not familiar with suc$l things as tax returns.
